EDU 776 Blog post #8: Reflection

 Looking Back and Looking Ahead

It seems like yesterday I was beginning the final course for my technology certificate and for my Master’s program - EDU 776.  This course has been primarily about technology in education.  I’ve learned a lot, and gained new insight and tools and created products that I know I will use in the future, and had a lot of fun along the way!  Read on for more specific reflections on EDU 776.

Course Highlights

Something that I always say is that the best form of PD for teachers is other teachers, and I feel strongly that will essentially always be true.  I really enjoyed how this class had a collaborative nature and that part of it was looking at and engaging with other classmates’ work products.  This course also reintroduced me to the world of blogging and Twitter.  Although I knew a lot about these two platforms before, I hadn’t used them much, and not at all for educational purposes.  I know I’ll continue to use Twitter in the future, and possibly this blog, too!  If there is anyone reading this blog that uses Twitter consistently in the educational world, let’s connect!  My handle is @heyitsmsschuler , and it’s definitely a goal of mine to keep up with it!  It’s great for Professional Learning Networks and getting constant bite sized teaching tips.

Although I am still working on it, I’ve also enjoyed creating a professional website as a project for this course, and I plan to make updates to it long after the course is over, as my educational career progresses.  I'm grateful for the assignment because it’s something I would not have prioritized making the time to create on my own, but view as a huge benefit to have.

Online Presence

Although I haven’t necessarily changed my views on using technology in the literal classroom, I have really shifted my perspective on my personal online presence in education.  I used to want the majority of my social media accounts to have nothing to do with education, and I’ve previously wanted to keep a somewhat low key digital footprint as an educator.  Now, I know that basically everyone has a huge digital footprint anyway, and though I still think it’s important to have to somewhat “filter” what I post online as an educator, my online presence can actually do much more good than harm.  Creating a stronger educational online presence has been a great experience now, and I know I will also reap the benefits of it in the future when it helps me make connections or opens up new opportunities for me down the road.

Handled

When I began this course, I felt overwhelmed by what was to come because technology and all the constant changes to keep up with is definitely something that can get me flustered.  I have also been in an overwhelming season of life and was worried about keeping up with all the work in general.  I initially shared the first Gif below as I was nervous, but trying to have a positive mindset and still put my best effort forward. Now, I feel that I can even upgrade to the second Gif below :)
